Step 2: Geometry

In this step you confirm how the aircraft sits in the wind and the reference values that the coefficients are based on.

The Geometry step

The Geometry step.

The views

The 3D view shows the model as it was read. The Top and Side silhouettes on the right show the aircraft as Deneb Aero understands it, with an arrow labelled WIND. Above the 3D view, the label (for example Wind along CAD +y) repeats the current choice.

  • In the Top view the wind arrow must point from the nose towards the tail, and the span is shown, for example span 2.49 m.

  • In the Side view the aircraft must be upright with the wind arrow from nose to tail, and the length and height are shown.

Drag in the 3D view to orbit, right-drag to pan and scroll to zoom. The buttons above it select Look (lighting), the orbit, top and wake views.

Geometry notes

Below the views, Deneb Aero lists what the geometry check found:

Note

Meaning

… overlap or touch: they are joined into one outer surface for meshing.

Normal for an assembly.

Slots narrower than the mesh’s surface cells, meshed closed or roughly

Expected at hinge gaps. Anywhere else, close the slot in CAD or open it wider.

… is … across, smaller than the mesh’s surface cells

The part is resolved only roughly. Leave it out unless it matters to the flow.

… intersects itself

The wall-resolved runs refuse it. Export the part again as a clean solid, or leave it out.

A part inside another

The inner part is removed.

Fields

Orientation and reference fields

Orientation and reference values.

Wind blows along

The CAD axis along which the air flows, from nose to tail. For example CAD +y (nose toward −y). Deneb Aero proposes a value; change it if the arrow in the views is wrong.

Up is

The CAD axis that points up.

Project name

The name shown in Projects and in the report. It defaults to the file name.

Wing reference area (m²)

The reference area S for all coefficients. Deneb Aero measures it from the planform, with the outer wing carried to the centreline. The hint shows the projected planform area for comparison.

Mean aerodynamic chord (m)

The reference length for the pitching moment and the position of the centre of gravity. The hint shows how far the leading edge of the mean chord is behind the nose.

Wing span (m)

The reference span for the rolling and yawing moments.

Aspect ratio

Calculated as b²/S. Read only.

Select Looks right to continue.

Tip

If you compare the results with another tool or a wind tunnel, use the same reference values there. Coefficients scale directly with the reference area.
